How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly

Use a quarter teaspoon for your face, apply to clean skin 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours.

  1. Start with clean, dry skin. Apply sunscreen as your final skincare step, after moisturizer but before makeup. Your skin should be completely dry to ensure even coverage and proper absorption.
  2. Use the right amount. Measure a quarter teaspoon for your face and neck—most people use half this amount and get inadequate protection. For your body, use roughly one ounce total, about a shot glass worth.
  3. Apply in sections. Dot sunscreen across your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin, then blend outward in gentle upward strokes. Don't forget your ears, hairline, and the back of your neck.
  4. Wait before sun exposure. Give chemical sunscreens 15 minutes to absorb and activate on your skin. Mineral sunscreens work immediately but still benefit from a few minutes to settle.
  5. Reapply consistently. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. Set a phone reminder—this is where most people fail at sun protection.
