How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly
Use a quarter teaspoon for your face, apply to clean skin 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours.
- Start with clean, dry skin. Apply sunscreen as your final skincare step, after moisturizer but before makeup. Your skin should be completely dry to ensure even coverage and proper absorption.
- Use the right amount. Measure a quarter teaspoon for your face and neck—most people use half this amount and get inadequate protection. For your body, use roughly one ounce total, about a shot glass worth.
- Apply in sections. Dot sunscreen across your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin, then blend outward in gentle upward strokes. Don't forget your ears, hairline, and the back of your neck.
- Wait before sun exposure. Give chemical sunscreens 15 minutes to absorb and activate on your skin. Mineral sunscreens work immediately but still benefit from a few minutes to settle.
- Reapply consistently. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. Set a phone reminder—this is where most people fail at sun protection.
