How to Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup

Use a setting spray with SPF, powder sunscreen, or gentle patting motions with cream sunscreen to maintain protection without destroying your look.

Your makeup will never be more important than your skin in twenty years, so stop overthinking the reapplication and just do it.

  1. Blot excess oil first. Press a tissue gently over your T-zone and any shiny areas. This removes excess sebum that would make sunscreen application patchy and helps the product adhere properly.
  2. Choose your reapplication method. Setting spray with SPF works fastest for light coverage. Powder sunscreen gives more control and works over any makeup. Cream sunscreen requires the gentlest touch but offers the most protection.
  3. Apply with minimal disruption. For spray, mist evenly 6 inches from face with eyes closed. For powder, use a fluffy brush in gentle pressing motions. For cream, pat with fingertips using a stippling motion, never rubbing.
  4. Touch up makeup if needed. Lightly dust setting powder over any areas that look disturbed. Use a small brush to blend any harsh lines where the sunscreen disrupted your base.
