How to Buffer Retinol with the Sandwich Method
Apply moisturizer, then retinol, then moisturizer again to reduce irritation while keeping the benefits.
Sandwiching is basically training wheels for your skin—necessary at first, but most people never bother to take them off even when they could handle direct application.
- Start with clean skin. Cleanse and pat dry completely. Your skin should feel clean but not tight or stripped.
- Apply first layer of moisturizer. Use a thin layer of your regular moisturizer as a buffer. This creates a protective barrier that slows retinol absorption.
- Wait and apply retinol. Let the moisturizer absorb for 2-3 minutes, then apply your retinol product. Use the smallest amount that covers your face.
- Seal with final moisturizer. Wait another few minutes, then apply a second thin layer of moisturizer to lock everything in and provide extra protection.
