How to Do Skin Cycling Correctly

Skin cycling rotates active ingredients on a four-night schedule to prevent irritation while maximizing results.

Skin cycling is just structured patience—it forces you to use actives intelligently instead of throwing everything at your face every night.

  1. Night 1: Exfoliation. Use a chemical exfoliant with AHA or BHA after cleansing. Start with lower concentrations if you're new to actives. Follow with a basic moisturizer, skip other actives.
  2. Night 2: Retinoid. Apply retinol or retinoid product to clean, dry skin. Wait 20 minutes before moisturizing to avoid dilution. Use the lowest effective dose that doesn't cause irritation.
  3. Nights 3-4: Recovery. Focus purely on hydration and barrier repair. Use gentle cleansing, hydrating serums, and rich moisturizers. No actives whatsoever during recovery nights.
  4. Repeat the cycle. Continue this four-night rotation consistently. Adjust timing based on your skin's response—some people need longer recovery periods, others can handle shorter ones.
