How to Keep Your Skin Happy Through Winter
Winter skincare is about locking in moisture before the cold strips it away, not fixing damage after it happens.
Everyone panic-buys heavy creams when winter hits, but the real secret is preventing moisture loss in the first place—your skin shouldn't feel tight enough to need rescuing.
- Switch to a creamier cleanser. Swap your summer gel cleanser for something with oils or a balm texture. Your skin needs to retain every bit of natural oil it can produce when humidity drops. Save the deep cleansing for warmer months.
- Layer moisture while skin is damp. Apply your serum or moisturizer within three minutes of washing your face, while skin still has water on it. This traps the water under your moisturizer instead of letting it evaporate into dry winter air.
- Add a facial oil as your final step. A few drops of facial oil over your moisturizer creates a protective barrier that prevents water loss overnight. Think of it as a winter coat for your face that you put on before bed.
- Don't skip SPF even on gray days. UV rays bounce off snow and still reach your skin through clouds. Winter sun combined with dry air creates the perfect conditions for accelerated aging. Use the same SPF you would in summer.
- Humidify your environment. Indoor heating sucks moisture from air and skin simultaneously. A humidifier in your bedroom adds back the moisture that heating systems remove, so your skin can focus on repair instead of survival.
