Winter Sports Skincare That Actually Works

Layer moisture, seal with occlusive, reapply SPF every two hours, and never skip lip protection.

Most people treat winter sports skincare like regular skincare with SPF slapped on top—that's why they end up looking like lobsters with frostbite.

  1. Pre-slope prep. Cleanse gently, apply a hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin, then layer a rich moisturizer with ceramides. Your skin needs moisture reserves before facing wind and cold.
  2. Create your barrier. Apply a zinc oxide sunscreen (SPF 30 minimum) as your final layer. The physical barrier protects against both UV and wind damage while the zinc soothes inflammation.
  3. Protect exposed areas. Use a lip balm with SPF and lanolin, then apply petroleum jelly or a thick balm to your nose, cheeks, and any exposed skin. These areas take the most beating from reflection and wind.
  4. Midday maintenance. Reapply sunscreen every two hours over your moisturizer base. Blot excess oil first, then press sunscreen into skin rather than rubbing to avoid disrupting your base layers.
  5. Post-activity recovery. Remove gear gently to avoid friction, cleanse with lukewarm water, then immediately apply a heavier night moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.
