How to Patch Test New Skincare Products
Apply a small amount of product to your inner forearm, wait 24-48 hours, and watch for any irritation before using it on your face.
Two days of patience saves weeks of dealing with an angry face.
- Choose your test spot. Use the inner side of your forearm, about two inches from your wrist. This area has similar sensitivity to facial skin but is less visible if reactions occur. Clean the area with a gentle cleanser and pat dry.
- Apply the product. Use a small amount—about the size of a pinhead—and gently pat it into a quarter-sized area. Don't rub vigorously or use more product than you normally would. Let it absorb completely.
- Wait and observe. Leave the area uncovered and avoid washing it for 24-48 hours. Check periodically for redness, itching, burning, swelling, or bumps. If any irritation appears, wash the area immediately with cool water.
- Evaluate the results. If no reaction occurs after 48 hours, the product is likely safe for your face. Start with once every few days when introducing it to your routine, especially with active ingredients.
