How to Prep Skin Before Makeup

Clean skin, lock in moisture, then create a smooth base with primer.

Most people overdo prep and wonder why their makeup looks heavy. Less product, more patience.

  1. Start with clean skin. Use your regular cleanser to remove any oils, sweat, or residue from overnight products. Pat dry with a clean towel. This gives your makeup a fresh foundation to grip onto.
  2. Apply moisturizer. Use a lightweight moisturizer suited to your skin type. Wait two minutes for it to absorb completely. Makeup sits better on hydrated skin and won't look patchy or cling to dry spots.
  3. Add SPF if needed. If your moisturizer doesn't contain SPF and you're going outside, apply sunscreen now. Give it another two minutes to set before moving to primer.
  4. Prime strategically. Apply primer where you need it most — usually T-zone for oil control or areas where makeup fades first. A thin layer is enough. This creates grip for foundation and extends wear time.
