How to Remove Makeup Completely
Double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser to dissolve and lift away all traces of makeup.
The double cleanse is non-negotiable if you wear makeup regularly. Your expensive serums can't work through a film of leftover foundation.
- Start with dry hands and face. Apply oil-based cleanser or micellar water to completely dry skin. Water dilutes the formula and makes it less effective at breaking down makeup, especially waterproof formulas.
- Work the cleanser in thoroughly. Massage gently for 30-60 seconds, focusing on areas with heavy makeup. The oil needs time to dissolve makeup bonds, particularly around the eyes and lips where products tend to be most stubborn.
- Remove with a damp cloth. Use lukewarm water and a soft cloth to wipe away the cleanser and dissolved makeup. Hot water strips your skin, cold water won't properly remove oil-based residue.
- Follow with water-based cleanser. Apply your regular face wash to remove any remaining oil and makeup residue. This second cleanse ensures your skin is completely clean and ready for skincare products.
- Check for missed spots. Run a cotton pad with micellar water over your face as a final check. Any makeup left behind will show up on the pad, particularly around the hairline and jawline where we often miss spots.
