How to Steam Your Face at Home
Pour hot water in a bowl, lean over it with a towel draped over your head for 5-10 minutes to open pores and soften skin.
Steaming is one of those things that feels more luxurious than it actually is, but that's exactly why it works.
- Set up your steam station. Fill a large bowl with just-boiled water and place it on a stable surface at table height. Add a few drops of essential oil if you want, but plain water works perfectly. The bowl should be wide enough that your whole face fits comfortably above it.
- Create your steam tent. Drape a clean towel over your head and lean over the bowl, keeping your face 12-18 inches from the water surface. The towel traps the steam around your face. If it feels too intense, lift the towel edge to let some steam escape.
- Steam and breathe. Stay under the towel for 5-10 minutes, breathing normally. Your skin should feel warm and dewy, not burning. Take breaks if you need them by lifting your head out from under the towel.
- Follow with gentle care. Pat your face dry with a clean towel and immediately apply your usual moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp. This locks in hydration and prevents that tight feeling.
