How to Build a 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine

Layer products from thinnest to thickest consistency, focusing on hydration and gentle care rather than aggressive treatments.

Ten steps sounds excessive until you realize most Western routines just pile on heavy products hoping for results, while this method actually feeds your skin systematically.

  1. Oil cleanser. Massage oil cleanser onto dry skin for 30 seconds to dissolve makeup and sunscreen. This removes oil-based impurities without stripping your skin.
  2. Water-based cleanser. Follow with a gentle foam or gel cleanser to remove remaining dirt and sweat. Double cleansing ensures your skin is properly clean without over-washing.
  3. Exfoliant. Use a gentle chemical exfoliant 2-3 times per week, not daily. BHA works well for oily skin, AHA for dry skin.
  4. Toner. Pat hydrating toner into skin with your hands or a cotton pad. Korean toners focus on hydration rather than astringent properties.
  5. Essence. Apply essence by patting it gently into skin. Think of it as a lightweight serum that preps your skin for other products.
  6. Serum or ampoule. Use targeted treatments here based on your skin concerns. Apply the thinnest consistency first if using multiple serums.
  7. Sheet mask. Use 2-3 times per week for 15-20 minutes. Remove and pat remaining essence into skin rather than rinsing off.
  8. Eye cream. Gently tap a rice grain amount around the eye area with your ring finger. Start from inner corner and work outward.
  9. Moisturizer. Apply a moisturizer suited to your skin type. Gel for oily skin, cream for dry skin, lotion for combination.
  10. SPF. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher during morning routine only. Reapply every two hours when exposed to sun.
